Field trip Sat 9th July – Cwm Cadlan

A bit short notice but I have been otherwise occupied away from home. There’s a field trip this coming Saturday, 9th July, to Cwm Cadlan NNR west of LLwyn-on Reservoir, near Penderyn..

The first thing to say about this location is that the walk in and out is fairly strenuous although it’s rated ‘3’ on the web site [i.e. involving stiles and gates] but I would say the initial walk down from the road [and therefore up at the end] is quite steep and can be wet & slippery.

There is little or no parking by the entrance gate which is direct off the minor road which runs from Llywn-on Reservoir to Penderyn. On our last visit we parked near the cattle grid at the Llwyn-on end and ferried people to the gate. So I suggest the meet point is the dirt roadside area just after the cattle grid as you come up the road through the forestry from the road at the back of Llwyn-on [the turn off is signed for Cwm Cadlan]. The area I’m referring to is at SN9938711959 as indicated on the map below. I suggest meeting there at c.09:30. If you wish to car share then I’d plan to leave St Margaret’s Rd in Whitchurch at 08:45 at the latest. Please let me know if you are coming and whether you wish to car share. I can take 3. As the GBC website suggests, we would hope to see upland species such as Whinchat and Grasshopper Warbler [altho’ it’s a little late to hear any ‘reeling’], but also Redstart.
