ooc – up north again

A few more shots from Unst this week. An Arctic Skua and a couple of Bonxies.

We walked through one of the larger breeding colonies of Bonxies – around 500 pairs getting ready to nest, so very easy to get close. Also lots of pairs of Arctics both light and dark morph despite their rapid decline in numbers up in Shetland.

Julian, Yes, it’s with Island holidays. Really excellent so far. It finishes on Monday. Loads of good photos.

  2. I regularly work in Shetland for “Shetland Wildlife”; ‘shame you didn’t book with them as I may have been your guide!
Regardless, it’s a great place so enjoy your last few days there. Have you seen otters yet?

    Julian, you lucky s…..
Such a great place to visit. Our guide was Derek Shaw, but he missed the first 2 days of the trip as he got stuck on Fair Isle. Derek was Warden of the FIBO for 14 years. For the first 2 days we hade Paul Harvey as Guide for the trip to Unst. He was also a FIBO warden prior to Derek. Not sure if you know them. Also got to meet Rebecca ???? (The photographer and a friend of Paul’s ) who was leading another tour (maybe Shetland Wildlife) on Unst.
    No otters though.

    1. Andy – indeed, I’ve known Deryk and Paul for many years and stayed at the Obs during their tenures. I was speaking to both of them last month while guiding on FI and Shetland. If you told them that you’re from South Wales, I’m surprised they didn’t ask if you knew me although they know me as “Judd” – as do most!
Rebecca Nason works for several companies but not Shetland Wildlife.
      Great pics by the way!
