East Glamorgan Bird Report

One of Glamorgan Bird Club’s main functions is to produce the annual East Glamorgan Bird Report [EGBR]. The report covers the County Boroughs of Cardiff, Caerphilly [west of the R. Rhymney], Merthyr, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan. For many years these areas were collectively known by the Club as ‘Eastern Glamorgan’ (probably due to the inclusion of tiny areas not strictly within Glamorgan). As can be seen from the title on this page, with the migration to online pdf format only (see below), it was felt timely to adopt a less ambiguous title of simply ‘East Glamorgan’ given that the definition of the area is itself quite clear.ly defined. Up to the 2021 Report, published in Dec 2022, this printed report has been posted annually to all GBC members. Starting with the 2022 Report, which will be due for publication in 2023, it will only be in ‘electronic’ format, published as a pdf document, but still available on publication, uniquely to GBC members. See below for further information.

These reports have been produced for many years and provide an important source of information about the bird life of the area. From approx 1997 to 2022 John Wilson was the editor, but after his retirement from the rôle after the publication of the 2021 report, fellow trustee Ceri Jones, kindly agreed to take it on. At the same time it was agreed that the report would henceforth only be published in pdf format, and that its main content would be basically limited to the species summaries. Therefore other supplementary information previously included in the printed report will be made available on this website (this will include inter alia the recording area details, guidelines for submitting records, description species lists, the East Glamorgan Species List and any other information or articles relevant to the year concerned). The photo editor for the 2021 report was Tom Wright, who took over in 2021 from long standing, and indeed founder Club member Richard Smith who did an excellent job for over 20 years – we owe Richard, who is sadly no longer with us, a huge debt of gratitude. Tom then had to move on due to work commitments but another young GBC member, Tate Lloyd, has stepped into the breach. The editor is assisted by an editorial team who write summaries for groups of species and write up various other sections of the report, such as the Foreword [GBC chair – currently {2022} Jean Haslam], the weather summary [currently {2022} Alan Rosney], a BTO report for the year [Wayne Morris & Daniel Jenkins-Jones], the East Glamorgan list [Peter Lansdown], and various ringing reports when available. As explained above, any of these items to be included for any particular year, will now be published on this website. Our County Recorder for East Glamorgan is Phil Bristow who is part of the Glamorgan Records Committee [GRC]. For details regarding the submission of records, see the menu bar item <Bird Report/Records>.<Records info> and select from the drop-down menu.

The production of the report starts at the beginning of the year after the one to which it relates, for obvious reasons. Tate will always be looking for photographs of birds seen in the relevant year and we have some guidelines as to what is required in terms of size and quality and subject. The pdf format guide which also contains Tate’s contact details, can be downloaded by clicking here. As a result of the future pdf format, requirements regading file size and resolution are probably not so crucial. The linked guidance above will be updated ASAP.

Birdwatchers throughout the area record their observations by various methods, and they ultimately reach the Editor and County Recorder [links to the relevant page on this site]. The latest publicly available report [2021] has been uploaded in full format, including all images.
