Steve Moon – R.I.P.

The fact the the very large church in Porthcawl this afternoon was completely full, and that at least 25 of Steve’s birding acquaintances were present says it all. You will be sorely missed but not forgotten Steve.

Very sad news . I first met Steve around 1983 when I was just getting into birding. I have many fond memories of all our trips and twitches both locally and nationally for the best part of the next 30 years, not to mention the countless hours wandering around Kenfig trying to find the next Glam tick. His enthusiasm for wildlife was infectious and was always willing to share his knowledge and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to Madeleine and David.

  2. Steve had many admirable qualities, but his enthusiasm and friendliness are two that first come to mind. He saw some great Glamorgan birds during his time and his name will be indelibly etched in birding folklore for sure. A very sad loss.

Absolutely gutted to hear this. Steve was an inspiration as well as a friend. He worked tirelessly for nature conservation and his enthusiasm for birding knew no bounds. His input into so many aspects of Glamorgan’s natural history societies was both professional and important. RIP Steve – you will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. My sincere condolences to Madeleine & David.

Steve’s passing is such a sad loss to not only the Natural History World but Local Government where he served as County Ecologist as well as KNNR Warden. Steve was a mentor to me when I first started spreading my birding wings and visiting Kenfig in the 80s. If you told him you thought you’d seen something he’d push you to ask why it was that and to do better next time! A visit in the following years just would not be the same without bumping into Steve and his sidekick Chip. Many of my early lifers were courtesy of them. He also mentored Emma and I as we took up Moth trapping. His versatility was limitless. During my seven years on the GBC Committee I succeeded Steve as Treasurer. His big personality always dominated committee and club meetings on those long cold winter evenings in the hall at the Prince of Wales and then later the New Reserve centre. RIP Steve, all the family extend our sincere condolences to Madeleine and David.
