Cardiff Bay Penarth side

Glaucous Gull roosting on Cardiff Dock Building. Having seen the recently published photograph we think that this might possibly be a different bird. It appeared white, if there were brown vermiculations they were very faint indeed. We observed the bird from circa 400 meters telescope x 25-60 the light was good, white of primaries paler than mantle. It was a very large bird as big as Great B/B Gull long straight pale bill with distal third dark brown.

Also: Black Redstart male Chiffchaff 2 both singing Turnstone 2 Great Crested Grebe 6, No sign of the LTD or Scaup.

  1. There have been 2 Glaucous Gulls present in the Bay since 23 Feb. One is the normal coloured bird the other a very pale bird. The pale bird seems to spend all its time either on the port warehouse roof, bathing in the outer area of the reserve or feeding in the dock area. Both birds have been seen together on the reserve and last weekend they were both seen on the jetty at Channel View.

Thank you for your comment on the sighting. I am pleased that you have clarified this as we were fairly certain that it could not have been the same bird as in the photograph. The light bird is more first summer than first winter.

      Best wishes
