Redstart (3), Tree Pipit (1) and Swift (5) of note this morning, as well as good numbers of Chiffchaff and Blackap, Whitethroat (3) and a single Willow Warbler. Of greater rarity here, a Great Black-backed Gull flew over Radyr – only our second one ever!

2 Great White Egrets at Llanrhidian this afternoon – at least 1 of them was seen there again at dusk. Also there at dusk: 4 Hen Harriers – 2 males and 2 ringtails.

Jack Snipe (3) and Common Snipe (12) in an area of wet rush in a field north east of St George’s this morning. (DJJ/GJJ).

Cosmeston / Ogmore-by-Sea
The Turtle Dove was still showing well at Cosmeston this morning and a single Purple Sandpiper was at Ogmore-by-Sea at high tide this evening. (DJJ/GJJ).
Radyr Floodplain / Forest Farm
Plenty of Redwings and Blackbirds about, Skylarks and Chaffinches over. But the highlight was a fly over Little Egret – the first one I’ve seen here since March 2011 (GJJ).
Rhaslas / Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve
Long-billed Dowitcher still present at a very wet and windy Rhaslas this morning and the Lesser Scaup was at CBWR. (DJJ/GJJ)

Quiet today apart from from a noticeable, if small, influx of Song Thrushes and Blackbirds overnight. Time to sign up for the BTO’s Winter Thrush Survey 🙂

Plenty of stuff on the move: Golden Plover (2 f/o); Spotted Flycatcher (1, poss 2); Stonechat (1 – different individual to y’day’s); Skylark (1); Meadow Pipit (40); Swallow (no more than 50 today); House Martin (20); Sand Martin (40); Whitethroat (1 – our latest autumn date here); Reed Bunting (4). Nightjar in Rumney, 28 September

A photo of a Nightjar taken by Vince Pulverness in his garden this morning. By my reckoning, this is only the 8th record of this species in September for VC41 and the second latest record ever. Nice one Vince!
