Purple Heron at Kenfig Saltmarsh/reedbed
The purple heron found this afternoon by Neil Donaghy was still present at 5.10pm. We (Jeff Curtis and I) saw it in flight when standing by the old wooden nature reserve sign overlooking the marsh and river area to the south of the new bridge over the river. Pictures on Glamorgan Rarities Committee blog. It landed in reeds at approximately SS783830. Mark Hipkin reports seeing it again at about 7pm. Two little ringed plovers were feeding in the sandy scrape on the east side of the haul road in the rejuvenation area.

Three of the five bar-tailed godwits with a whimbrel on Sker Farm yesterday evening. There were 30 whimbrel, 9 golden plover and 28 wheatear all in this field near Pink Bay. Sadly no sign of the reported 4 ruff in breeding plumage.
Ring Ouzel at Kenfig

Here’s a record shot of yesterday’s bird sent by Robin Marsland.
Ring Ouzel at Kenfig
A female ring ouzel was seen by visiting birders at about 3pm. It was seen from the southern permissive bridleway. The bird was flying about a bit but the observers said it did not leave the general area. I went down after 4pm and searched with no luck.
Highlights from this morning’s guided walk were lesser whitethroat, reed warbler and an early swift.
Sker
19 purple sandpiper, 15 turnstone, 8 whimbrel, 7 oystercatcher, 2 grey plover and a dunlin at high tide this morning. A drake common scoter flew down channel. No sign of yesterday’s 11 bar-tailed godwit.

Kenfig

The grasshopper warbler found by Neil yesterday was out singing again this morning near the south-west margin of Kenfig Pool. The male redstart was about too in the hazel copse near the south pool beach.
Kenfig

Sandy slack or scrape that’s proved very popular with white wagtails this spring. A little ringed plover was in the more vegetated slack just to the north today.
Kenfig
A good day for migrants with at least four whitethroats, lesser whitethroat, common sandpiper, grasshopper warbler and a male redstart. Thanks Neil for finding the redstart, I hope to catch up with the gropper tomorrow. A drake shoveler turned up on the pool later and there were 11 white wagtails on the haul road sandy scrapes.
Sker
Two whimbrel over the point made up for a quiet morning bird wise. Four ringed plover were on Kenfig Sands and a few swallows were on the move.
Sker Point
Promising birding conditions failed to deliver much but a barnacle goose flew over in the drizzle to the east. If Adrian’s ticking that dove then I’m claiming a wild goose!
Garganey at Kenfig Saltmarsh/reedbed
A drake garganey was on the saltmarsh this afternoon. It showed briefly in the same place the gwt has been seen near some gorse bushes. It was seen at about 3.45pm and has subsequently been seen at about 6pm.
Sker Point

Some of the golden plovers were looking rather dapper this morning!
Sker Point

Some of the 21 purple sandpipers counted at high tide (counted by DCB, I only managed to get 18). A white wagtail was nearby on the beach too.
