Red Kite
A red kite drifting quite close to rooftops over central Killay yesterday just before noon.
Cuckoo heard calling in Clyne Woods towards direction of golf course.
Kittle/ Bishopston
Quite a sight to see 150+ lapwing rising up, startled, from a field close to Kittle egg farm this morning.
Swansea
Single redwing in garden at Upper Killay with two song thrush and six blackbirds.
Two red kites above Liberty Stadium as Swansea City thrashed West Ham!
Swansea Waxwings
30+ birds still present at right-hand side of Range store Winchwen at 16.30. Cracking views of birds in stand of tall trees. Very accessible.
Fairwood Common
A turtle dove flew in front of my car close to the windscreen as I passed the airfield going towards Upper Killay. One emergency stop later and I observed it on nearby scrub for a few minutes before it flew off deeper into the common.
Clyne Valley
Mill Wood area alive with Chiff Chaff now.
Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker present.
The odd Willow Warbler heard but no
Blackcap noted yet. Three swallows feeding above fields near Clyne farm. Also the curious sight of two nuthatch mating in woods nearby.
Clyne Woods
A very spring-like feel in the woods this morning. Birdsong was in full swing including several great spotted woodpecker drumming. Of note: three grey wagtail along the river; one dipper and two separate sightings of single redwing ground feeding near the bike path by the Railway Inn.
Rhossili Cliffs
On a glorious morning along the cliff top there were: two peregrine falcons, one ‘stooping’ into a pigeon flock and two kestrels further along. About 30+ oystercatchers were roosting on the causeway as a cormorant followed the tide in. In an adjacent field two meadow pipits turned up and a very obliging black redstart (male).
Overton Mere/ Oxwich Beach and Dunes
Saturday – Overton Mere with Gower Ringing Group
10+ rock pipits on shoreline. At sea: 1 gannet, 16+ common scoter, 5 cormorant. Above: 1 kestrel, vis. mig. of 1800+ redwing, 200+ wood pigeon moving south east.
Sunday – Oxwich
Dunes: 1 mistle thrush, 13 siskin, 1 lesser redpoll, 2 stonechat. Feeding on wrack: 10 pied wagtail and 6 meadow pipits.
Llanrhidian Marsh
An hour or so before dusk: great views of 1 ringtail hen harrier, 1 distant short-eared owl, 10+ little egret going to roost, 1 kestrel hovering over-head and a good sized starling murmuration. One green woodpecker also heard in trees behind.
Upper Killay
25+ redwing over Upper Killay at 8 am. Lots of tawny owl calls in Clyne Valley last night.
Clyne Woods
One greenwoodpecker persistently yaffling this morning. Great spotted woodpecker drumming and great visual of prominently singing goldcrest, dunnock, chiffchaff, song thrush. Also treecreeper, marsh tit buzzard and two coal tits foraging together amongst catkins. No blackcap this time or willow warbler.
Penmaen Burrows / Nicholaston Woods 18.4.15
Kestrel then peregine falcon on Great Tor, 30+ goldfinch, linnet 20+ (incl. 3 singing males), male stonechat, whitethroat and chaffinch all singing too, one swallow overhead and numerous chiffchaff.
Bishopston
Red kite quartering low near The Glebe.
Clyne Valley
Two singing male blackcap at Clyne and a very active dipper. Counted half a dozen Chiffchaff. Bullfinch, greenfinch and willow tit calling as well as peckers drumming. Jay and woodpigeon with nesting material. Also jackdaws and starling nesting in and around houses on Gower Rd.
Clyne Valley
Glorious spring day in the valley today. Lots of woodpeckers drumming, tits clearly prospecting, woodpigeon courting and the highlight, first Chiff Chaff of the year for me, seen and heard at Mill Wood area.
Various
Male stonechat on hedge, Kestrel on pole at side of rd through Nicholaston. Rooks with nesting material and one skylark at Cefn Bryn. Male sparrowhawk at Oxwich. Male/ female bullfinch pair Upper Killay.
