Dunraven & Ogmore

An hour’s vis mig watch at Dunraven this morning saw two Yellow Wagtails, eight Grey Wagtails, 230 Siskins and a steady stream of hirundines among the passage. A Whimbrel was roosting on the beach with a few Curlews and Oystercatchers at Temple Bay.

At Ogmore Estuary three Pintail flew up the river but declined to come down, two Shoveler were at Portobello, six Dunlin were on the estuary and a Sedge Warbler was in bracken at Portobello.

More Ogmore

A juvenile Marsh Harrier flew over the estuary from the Candleston direction at 13:20, before flying along the edge of the golf course and then turning towards the sea, being lost to view behind Pant Norton. First site record for me.

Also Black-tailed Godwit and Dunlin (pictured) at Portobello, plus flocks of small waders along the beach by Black Rocks, but too distant to get to grips with.

Ogmore

A decent selection of waders on the beach over high tide this evening, including three Knot and eight Bar-tailed Godwits, with dozens each of Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Sanderling and Oystercatcher. At least two Whimbrel were on the estuary, while a Little Egret fed on the lower estuary before flying off east. A Greylag Goose was with the building Canada Goose flock, fairly unusual here.

Southerndown

A two hour lunchtime watch from the cliff top by West Farm produced Pomarine Skua (flew in at 11:45 and settled on the sea directly offshore for 15 mins, before continuing down channel), Great Skua, Razorbill, six Storm Petrels, Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars and Gannets.

Late news from yesterday of two Arctic Skuas seen off here at 13:30.

Allt y Rhiw & Cwm Ogwr Fach (Blackmill)

Allt y Rhiw – Cuckoo, Redstart [3], Wood Warbler [3 or 4], Spotted Flycatcher, Garden Warbler, Tree Pipit, families of Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, etc.

Cwm Ogwr Fach – Cuckoo, Redstart [2], Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Pipit, Grey Wagtail, Bullfinch, Garden Warbler. Also here a colony of Small Blue butterflies at a small area of Kidney Vetch along the cycle track (former railway line), south-east of Glynogwr, was unexpected.

Ogmore

A female Ring Ouzel was just down from the lower end of Pant Norton this morning, associating with Blackbirds and Song Thrushes. Also there a Lesser Whitethroat, plus lots of Common Whitethroats, Blackcaps, phylloscs and Yellowhammers.

Earlier a Bar-tailed Godwit, three Whimbrels, three Wheatears and a House Martin at Ogmore-by-Sea.

Great White Egret

News from Dave Ripley of a Great White Egret seen in flight near Ogmore Castle at 16:30. The bird was headed more or less in the direction of Kenfig and didn’t appear to be coming down, but I’ll check out the estuary in the morning.

Ogmore

A Scandinavian Rock Pipit was at Ogmore-by-Sea – at the bottom of the little dry valley by The Deeps – but no sign of any Wheatears there today, following one seen on 9th March by D Ripley.

On the estuary the Water Pipit is now acquiring breeding plumage and is more reliably found, with the Common Sandpiper still at Ploran Mawr. Further sightings included 9 Purple Sandpipers, 22 Goldeneye, 6 Goosanders and a Dunlin, this being the first I have seen there this year.
