Mumbles Head

Sandwich tern, 4 common scoter and a porpoise off the Tutt early morning
Whimbrel on Bracelet Beach
An immature mute swan off Knab Rock was unusual.
188 kitts on ledges on the pier / sitting on the water close by, and a guillemot on the sea. No sign of female eider, but there was one present last night.
Seems like the ravens on the Lighthouse Island have fledged three young this year. Two adults (in wing moult) and three other birds (assumedly young) were flying around the area last night.

Tutt Head Seawatch 06:30-09:00

Fairly slow considering the reports from further east.
1 red-throated diver (partial summer plumage), 1 storm-petrel (c. 07:00), 14 fulmar (west), 14 Maxies (12w 2e)
4 commic terns (looked like commons), 9 gannet (8w), porpoise and grey seal
Visibility very in and out, and moderate to poor until just after 8, by which time the birds had dried up. Andrew Lucas had a skua spp at around 07:30, but too briefly and distantly to id.

Oxwich

Marsh harrier again – briefly – this evening. Flew over marsh road towards Penrice Castle. Seen from car, then briefly after I pulled over.
9 whimbrel at Nicholaston Pill until flushed by walkers
Nothing in the inshore waters and 2 gadwall on the South Pond.

Longhole Cliff to Porteynon Point

Lesser whitethroat in the valley at Longhole, along with a family party of stonechat.
Whimbrel (3) on the foreshore in front of Overton Cliff, and my first swift of the year over.
More fledged stonechats on the west side of Overton Mere, and a second pair alarming on the east side.
Singing wheatear at Porteynon Point.

Rams Tor (Limeslade) and Oxwich Point

Two chough over Rams Tor, Limeslade this afternoon. First time in 2 years I have seen them this far east (well outside breeding range in Gower). The birds were last seen flying back west over Langland.
Off Oxwich Point today 2 common scoter, 2 grey seal and a foraging harbour porpoise. In the fields above a white wagtail.

Oxwich Marsh

Marsh harrier (first seen by CDB), wood warbler and grasshopper warbler (1+) were the main interest this morning. Siskins have bred on the marsh / close to it this year, as juvenile birds were present today, and a flock has been present throughout the spring.

Oxwich

Red-throated diver (w/pl) still present, but at Oxwich Bay Hotel end of the beach tonight.
Very few waterfowl on the freshwater ponds.
199 kittiwakes counted on Mumbles Pier this evening.

Oxwich

Red-throated diver (non br/pl) off Nicholaston Pill on the high tide this evening.
Siskins still present around the marsh.
On the pool a female mallard with 6 ducklings, gadwall, little grebe (2) and mute swan.

Clyne Common

Tree pipit singing on the edge of Clyne Common near Pwll-y-Froga Farm (Blackhills Lane) this evening.
6 wheatear on the edge of golf course (5 male).
3 snipe flushed from wet ground near Broadley Farm.
[3 snipe also noted at Oxwich Marsh last night – but no reed or sedge warblers heard]

Oxwich Marsh

Two grasshopper warblers were reeling from the marsh just before dawn.
No evidence of reed or sedge warblers, but numerous willow warblers, chiffchaffs and blackcaps.
A tufted duck (male) near the hide was an unusual record for the site.

Overton / Longhole Cliff

A grasshopper warbler reeling from scrub in the valley at Longhole this morning.
A pair of bullfinch holding territory in dense scrub at the top of the valley for the second year running.
Fulmar, the usual sparrowhawks, plenty of chiffchaffs and the odd willow warbler, plus a swallow over.

Worm’s Head Hotel to Paviland (Foxhole Slade)

Walked the sheep tracks to look for early migrants – particularly ring ouzel.

No ring ouzel, but my first wheatear of the year at Kitchen Corner (a male), red kite (2cy) circling over and perching in scrub in the valley at Mewslade, and a few yellowhammer between the top of Ram Grove and farmland above Foxhole Slade (where several present). Fulmar on cliffs around Lewes Castle (Fall Bay east) and between there and Mewslade. Common lizard near Pilton Green.

Porteynon and Oxwich

Early morning trip to both.
Highlight was 6 purple sandpiper with a turnstone and 12 ringed plover at high tide on Sedger’s Bank. Two chough over.
Still in excess of 25 teal at Oxwich scattered around the ponds, but a great crested grebe was the only bird of any interest on the sea.
