Pyle area
Single Skylark flying over Pyle today and single Meadow Pipit yesterday, vanguard of migratory flocks yet to come? Grey Wagtail active on Afon Cynffig near the weir and plenty of Goldcrest calling in Collwyn woods. One singing male.
Afon Cynffig and Collwyn Pyle
Dipper active near bridge over Afon Cynffig and was sure I heard a Mistle Thrush singing there earlier on. Blackcap in with flock of LT Tits. 8 Swallows over trees, appeared to include young being fed in flight.
Collwyn wood and Afon Cynffig, Pyle
Sparrowhawk hunting over Collwyn this morning, harried by Jackdaws. Cormorant checked out weir then flew downstream. 5 House Martin, could be sole remaining pair from Pyle Cross, with young. Mixed Tit flock buioding up and Nuthatch venturing into nearby gardens. Carrion Crow “crocking” like a timid Raven.
Red Kite, Pyle
Red Kite over Pyle yesterday afternoon, approx 4pm. Soaring over Pyle church end of Collwyn woods and then checked out the fields being mowed on other side of Afon Cynffig. Treated to close views as almost over my garden at one point.
Bosherston Cattle Egret
If you happen to be in the Bosherston Lily Pond area, there has been a Cattle Egret roosting in trees on the Eastern Arm, below Stackpole Court walled garden. Found it Monday evening.
Collwyn Pyle
Treecreeper singing in the wood along Afon Cynffig yesterday, heard and then seen. I may previously have thought of it as Goldcrest song, will listen more carefully from now on. 2 Chiffchaff singing and Crow gathering nest material.
Kenfig
Good view of singing Chiffchaff this afternoon with another heard near the reserve Centre.
Approx 10 Sand Martin feeding over the Pool and at least 1 pair of Goldeneye displaying.
Redwing singing Pyle
As well as singing Goldcrest x 2, treated to single singing Redwing and nearby flock of 10+ Redwing in sub-song in trees along lane near Marlas Farm/bridge this morning
Collwyn, Pyle
Late yesterday afternoon: singing Goldcrest and excellent view of Treecreeper feeding, close to lane down to Afon Cynffig. Great Spotted Woodpecker and Redwing present. All within short distance from main road and houses.
Dipper and Goldcrest
Dipper singing on Afon Cynffig in Pyle yesterday. Water level has to reveal perches which are either rocks or fallen branches, as bird has been absent during, and after, heavy rain.
Excellent view of pair of displaying Goldcrest in trees above singing Dipper. Male with fully revealed crest (more bright orange than yellow). First such sighting for me.
Goosander
1 male and 5 female Goosander and 2 male Shoveler at Wilderness, Newton, this afternoon.
Snow Bunting Porthcawl
Obliging Snow Bunting on the promenade in Porthcawl mid-morning, below Seabank Hotel and Booths blue cafe kiosk. 2 Chough still present on the common. Flock of 120+ Golden Plover flew over common heading inland. Few Turnstone on the rocks.
KNNR
Mid-morning walk at Kenfig began with a fiesty Chiffchaff chasing off Long Tailed, Blue and Great Tit from its favoured tree, where it was making aerial forays for insects. Then a female or imm. Blackcap was showing well feeding on Blackberries near the bird table below the Centre.
Had 2 second sighting from South Hide of a Bittern landing deep into reed bed on West of Pool just as I was describing them, in comparison to a Grey Heron, to a first time visitor to the reserve.
.
Fieldfares
100+ Winter Trushes flying South high over Pyle at 7.25am, mostly Fieldfare with a good several of them calling.
