Impressive starling murmuration over Whitchurch from 16:00 onwards. Minimum of 3000 birds but probably nearer 5000 as it was splitting, rejoining and disappearing behind buildings with more birds coming in all the time.

Last night (Monday 24th July) 21:50 – 22:30
Nightjars – churring and wing clapping heard from 2 different locations, 3 birds in total.
Also Grasshopper Warbler reeling and observed.
Red-Flanked Bluetail
Just missed it at 9:45 but saw it at 10:15 in usual spot.
Cardiff Bay (late afternoon)
Adult male Black Redstart at Plas Taliesin, 7 Scaup and the Long-Tailed Duck off boardwalk at old ice rink site.
Llanwonno
Nightjar – churring hear at 21:05; 1 observed at 21:15 was also wing clapping. Soon after, that one (presumably) together with a second bird flew into view.

Tree Pipit – 2 singing, Redstart – 1 singing, Wood Warbler – 1 singing.

Common Tern – 1
Swift – built up from 4 when I arrived to 32 this afternoon but most moved on.
River Taff, Gabalfa
1 Swift among the hirundines around Western Avenue bridge at 15:00.
Cardiff City Stadium
Mediterranean Gull – summer plumaged adult in black-headed gull flock in car park near Lidl this morning.
The Knap/Barry Dock/Cosmeston
The Knap – Glaucous Gull at beach at about 15:00.
Barry Dock – 3 adult Med. Gulls.
Cosmeston – Lesser Scaup near boardwalk.
Whitchurch
Female brambling and female blackcap in trees behind our back garden fence.
Ogmore area
The Watermill. Goshawk – 1 had a go at a buzzard, a few hundred hirundines (mainly swallows) over river.
Portobello Island. Canada geese – 400, Little Egret – 2, Peregrine – 1.
Ogmore Beach. Med. Gull – 1 adult.
Llanwonno
Close views of 2 Nightjars circling around me last night at about 22:00. Male wing clapping and churring from nearby tree. Third bird also suspected.
Whitchurch (Silver Birch Close)
Lesser Whitethroat singing this morning in the unusual location of the large rear gardens of Heol Gabriel and in the trees of a front garden across the road from our house.

1 Tree Pipit singing.
Morganstown & Whitchurch
House Martin (1), Swallow (3) and Raven (2) over Taff at Morganstown. Also a few Blackcaps singing.
Willow Warbler singing near in Whitchurch this morning.
FForest Ganol
Minimum of 10 Hawfinches at 10:50. Observed off and on for the next 30 minutes or so near white house at top of trail.
Unsurprisingly, no sign of recently dead Polecat I found there yesterday.
