The Turtle Dove was still showing well at Cosmeston this morning and a single Purple Sandpiper was at Ogmore-by-Sea at high tide this evening. (DJJ/GJJ).
Quiet today apart from from a noticeable, if small, influx of Song Thrushes and Blackbirds overnight. Time to sign up for the BTO’s Winter Thrush Survey 🙂
51 species this morning (0745-1020). Plenty of stuff on the move: Golden Plover (2 f/o); Spotted Flycatcher (1, poss 2); Stonechat (1 – different individual to y’day’s); Skylark (1); Meadow Pipit (40); Swallow (no more than 50 today); House Martin (20); Sand Martin (40); Whitethroat (1 – our latest autumn date here); Reed Bunting (4). Also still plenty of Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps around. Snipe (2) at Llyn y Gamlas/Forest Farm. (DJJ/GJJ)

A photo of a Nightjar taken by Vince Pulverness in his garden this morning. By my reckoning, this is only the 8th record of this species in September for VC41 and the second latest record ever. Nice one Vince!
A count of 20 spotted flycatchers mixed in with willow warblers and chiffchaffs feeding together. I assume getting ready for return migration? (NJD pers comm)
More info on this morning’s Nightingale. The bird was perched up in an elder on Radyr Floodplain for c.5mins at ST141802. It then flew into dense cover but, despite an hour’s search, it was sadly not seen again (DJJ).
Quiet on the bird front, but good numbers of common butterflies, with a single Clouded Yellow being the highlight.
