That’s very interesting Peter. I gave just had an e-mail from a former contributor to the old sightings pages who said he saw 6 flying over St Athan yesterday in an easterly direction at 13:10, constantly calling. That would see to imply that they dropped in somewhere overnight.
As has been pointed out on Twitter, they are almost certainly from the Great Crane Project reintroduction programme – had completely forgotten about that!

There were a couple of cranes up at Slimbridge again today, almost certainly up from the Somerset Levels back to where they were hatched. There must be a fair number that fly over us on the way up there. Not surprised we miss them if they fly that high.

That lonesome individual may be the one that was seen east of Saltmarsh Lane near Goldcliff today! (per BirdGuides)
