Ogmore: A Greenshank and two Kingfishers of note. Also present a ‘pest controller’ who has been shooting Canada Geese there. Speaking to him it wasn’t long before he started on about shooting Cormorants on inland waters how and that there too many Buzzards now. As you can imagine I somewhat lost it at that point. Anyway, he told me he had killed 18 geese on his first day of shooting, which seems a pretty pathetic return when there are about 500 there – reckon I could do better with a loaf of bread and a pointy stick! I assume he is not being paid for that level of return, so perhaps the reason is that he enjoys shooting them, rather than to realistically control the numbers?
Llanilid: beware parking by the fenced off road by the film studios – a birder got ticketed there today. Seems a bit mad as loads of people park there and it doesn’t go anywhere, perhaps the justification is that his wheel was on a white line? Anyhow, just a heads up.
May be worth finding out who owns the land as NT have just banned shooting on the marsh between Whiteford and Crofty!!!
Thanks, Barry. He told me he has the farmer’s permission, so it might well be legal. Hopefully he’ll soon get bored and go and kill things somewhere else.
where exactly was he shooting ? Shooting is not allowed along the estuary or on the dunes i will be looking into this . No need to shoot the geese they do no harm that’s disgusting not to mention he may shoot the cormorants too possibly the Herons . I will defiantly be reporting this news …
I’m afraid he didn’t say exactly where on the estuary he was shooting. If it was upstream of the sewage works bridge would that be legal? Anyway, if I see him in action down there I’ll let you know.
Thanks Paul i will see if shooting rights are legal there . No need to shoot the geese they are harmless . 😦
Just been informed that injured geese has been seen there too so im calling the wildlife police tomorrow . Shooting them dead is one thing injuring them and leaving them is wildlife crime .. Im not sure what the law is above the sewage bridge but i walk there regular so do other people so take care anyone walking about there ..
I was at Ogmore this morning to do my monthly WeBS count. No shooters, just hordes of dog walkers, horse riders, anglers, campers, joggers……….oh, and four characters ferreting for rabbits in the dunes. Just a typical Sunday morning on the river!
I’ve heard that wildfowling is illegal on a Sunday, but I don’t profess to be an expert around the law concerning shooting. The ‘pest controller’ I met the other day didn’t give the impression of being a cowboy and may be above board, although I’m not sure what his justification for shooting geese at Ogmore is.
Good luck with your enquiries.
Well im getting bits on info about it and i have called the wildlife police just to see what is going on but as usual im waiting for them to ring me back . But i will ring them tomorrow if i haven’t heard anything.. Yes it illegal to shoot on Sundays . By the way the last 2 days ive seen a beautiful red kite while driving past the car park by the river 🙂 . Thanks for all your info Paul
Just an update
Spoke to police apparently he can shoot as many as he likes where ever he likes 😦 ah well i tried. He did ask me if i see him to ask his name and who is employing him. He was pretty sure it’s Methyr Mawr Estate doing it ..
Ok, worth asking the question.
