John, there are at least 2 water rails around that area of the boardwalk. On Friday I got shots of a rather plump bird with a leg ring , but earlier on Friday there was a smaller bird with no leg ring and again this morning I flushed the small one with no leg ring from under the boardwalk – it headed off into the reeds.

Cheers Andy. Yes I know there’s a good population of Water Rail in the park overall – Jeff Curtis and Tony Messinger have done a couple of winter surveys using playback lure to which they respond very well, and enable and estimate of numbers to be logged. There’s a record of the result in the 2013 Bird Report but I can’t remember off the stop of my head what the figure was.
