Mediterranean Gulls at Porthcawl

Four different Mediterranean Gulls were noted late morning / low tide. A first winter and adult winter plumaged bird were scrounging for chip at SS807773 along the main path just south of Lock’s Common. A superb adult summer-plumaged bird together with another adult winter were roosting with about 40 Black-headed and 2 Common Gulls in the Salt Lake car park near the fun fair at SS821768.

Mike, I was there about midday and saw 3 Meds in the carpark including that summer adult. It had a white darvic ring E817, the other two: adult with partial hood & 2nd winter and at Rest Bay a 1st W. The adult with the ring is a real beauty. I haven’t seen one like that for years. Pity I didn’t have a camera! Jake.

Yes it was a corker Jake. I saw the white rings but with no scope and only a crap mobile phone shot and kids to sort out, dog shit on bike wheels, etc, I left it at that! Porthcawl is really good for Meds. When Emma and I did our traditional New Year birdy day we logged 9 different individuals. Ranging from The larger of The Wilderness Pools up to Lock’s Common. A bag of chips at Beales and a camera always a good tactic! Mike.
