Remaaarkable! Do you have extensive Reed Beds in your Canton garden, Steve? Sedge Warblers will sing from trees and bushes near breeding habitat, but RW are pretty confined to reedy areas, in my experience. With an average lifespan of 2 years and a maximum proven life of around 10-11, it can’t be the same bird since 2000. What is making the garden so attractive?
One would think there would be reeds Paul! But no. Our garden backs onto the railway and has an extensive bushy area and well established trees—not typical Reed Warbler country! It is 400 yards as the (warbler flies) from the Ely River and about 1 mile from Canton Ditches where Reed Warbs turn up regularly and a site 1.25 miles away on the Ely River where they are present every year and probably breed. Goodness knows what makes the garden attractive but a mere “chance” on each occasion.
