Cardiff Bay

The Black-necked Grebe first seen yesterday afternoon by Chris Hawes from the Ice Rink area, was round the corner at the mouth of the Taff this morning, associating with around 12 Little Grebes between the east side of Cardiff Bay road bridge and the first line of moored boats, best viewed from the W side by Windsor Quay apartments, where there is shelter if it’s raining! Present  until 12:30 at least, when I left.

Ooops, Dave Gilmore posted [below] whilst I was in the process of composing this! 🙂

Port Eynon

I arrived as Owain and Rhian were leaving. I managed to see 10 of the 16 Purple Sands & the 2 Chough made a brief appearance. Additional birds included a 2cy Little Gull just off the point along with Kittiwakes 86 (mostly loitering), 14+ Med Gulls, 12 Guillemots (sadly none of the Black persuasion), 1 Red-throated Diver, 9 female Common Scoter loafing just of the point and 1 Fulmar.

Elsewhere Owen Leyshon saw a G.N.Diver, 3 Slavonian Grebes & 52 Eiders at Whiteford and 2 Velvets among the distant flock of 1300+ Common Scoters in Rhossili Bay.

Porteynon

16 purple sandpiper on Sedgers Bank was my highest ever Gower count. Also 14 turnstone, redshank, little egret, and small flocks of oystercatcher and curlew. 6 shag close in.

Also 26 ravens over the cliffs above Holy’s Wash (between Slade and Oxwich Point). Birds displaying / tumbling and calling. Two chough also present.

Footit Day 1

Footit Day 1

Managed to get out this afternoon when the rain eased, walking from home to Ogmore via Merthyr Mawr and then back across Ewenny Moor – 8 miles, 55 species. Nothing unexpected, but nice to see Goldeneye on the Ogmore now up to 27, four Little Egrets near the Watermill, Treecreeper near Island Farm and two Reed Buntings in my garden.
Think I’m going to struggle to get near last year’s January walking from home total of 103, but I’m already feeling virtuous!

Port Eynon New Year list!

In spite of the weather I had to get out to get the year list underway.  There are several Turnstones, and handful of Ringed Plover and a couple of Oystercatchers making the most of whatever was washed up last night, plus Rock Pipit, Stonechat, and a few gulls and corvids.

Happy new year to all, and hopefully, I’ll be back in the summer.

Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs

A final look at the reservoirs for 2013, in fading light. On Lisvane: 1 Y-L gull, among a good roost of 80 LBB gulls, 12 herring gulls and 161 BH gulls. Gunshots from just north of the reservoir caused the whole flock to fly off at 15:50. Also, 48 tufties, 5 pochards, 2 mallards, 11 little grebes, 30 Canadas, 11 coots, 1 heron, 2 grey wags.

2013-12-31 15.47.27

On Llanishen: 1 water rail, 57 mallard, 12 teal, 4 coots (my highest count here since the res was drained!), 2 tufties, 5 common snipe, 2 pied wags. Happy New Year everyone 🙂
