whitford sands sunday ,
approx 590 sanderling which seems a good count for down here. Also, 24 black tailed gowit,32 ringed plover on beach;pretty stotmy ,otherwise
Excellent count – only 9 other UK sites average higher counts than this (NB GB threshold for national importance is 160, so well in excess of that). Also the presence of Black-wits there this winter suggests the gradual shift in sediments is making the area more productive? Be interesting to see if these birds stick around…
there seems to be a good feeding area of muddy sediment midway along the sands, which forms a small, sloping bay. This tends to congregate whatever wader sp. are around.Had roughly the same no.of black-wits around 3 weeks ago.As for the sanderling, whether they came from Cefn Sidan area(?),or even Swansea bay area?? , who knows?Seems to be a lot of cockle\muscle harvesting going on.Increased food due to damaged molluscs??
