Ahh, following our conversation last night, I now know who Bittern2022 is! Plumage and leg/beak colour is how most of us start to identify birds. A Robin is that smallish brown bird with an orange front, a blackbird is black and so on. But that only takes us so far. As you know, bird often vary their colours based on age, season and gender. When non-birders are walking with me and ask what that brown bird is, and I say ‘blackbird’ they may say ‘but it isn’t black’, and I tell them it’s a juvenile, or a female. It’s a challenge for sure, and gulls are particularly tricky, but we need to get beyond colour and also not behaviour, vocalisations, size and structure. Not that I am an expert, esp on gulls! As you have found, BHGs start with quite bright orange legs and bill as juveniles and these parts get darker for adults in breeding season.
