I’m coming to Caerphilly for a couple of days next weeks, I’d appreciate more directions for Dippers. Where to park. Perhaps a post code. Many thanks.

Hello Keith, Ok, I’ve seen the Dippers twice along what is the Ely Trail. On each occasion it’s been quite early in the day (7am). The Trail/path begins at the bottom of Fairways Crescent where it joins Bwlch Road. At that junction is a short road (Landwade Close) which is a slope going down to the start of the trail proper. Google the location and it’s quite obvious. A post code for Fairways Crescent would be CF5 3DZ or CF5 3EA to get you to the right general location in Fairwater, Cardiff. You could park a vehicle anywhere along either road, there are no restrictions other than not to block someone’s driveway! You could park very close to the Landwade Close entry point to the trail. To get to the “Dipper location” (!) walk down the slope of Landwade Close and enter the obvious footpath, this goes through a tree lined path alongside the River Ely. Walk onwards and westwards towards St Fagans; where the railway line crosses over the River Ely–about four hundred metres along there is an area where the water flows over stones and is ideal for Dippers. There is a good vantage point to view onto the river . Anywhere along the river where it is shallow enough and has water babbling over stones would be good to watch for dipper but the vantage point I have described seems best. Always a matter of luck being there at the right times but the walk towards St Fagans is pleasant in itself. Good luck with your trip to the area.
