Grangemoor Park / Penarth

Of note: 1 Cetti’s heard, 6 Meadow Pipits, Female Stonechat. Very brief silhouette of snipe shaped bird (probably a snipe then), M bulfinch. Impressive arrival of c120 Canada geese flying in to the bay.

2 Turnstone John Batchelor Way

Penarth: Unusual to see pair of chaffinch in garden and a grey wagtail briefly attempt the feeders.

CBWR

The hybrid resembling Lsr Scaup was showing much more clearly this morning and was obviously a hybrid. Also present was a Shoveler pair, a Teal, 3 Stonechats around the flower patch, 3 calling and singing Chiffchaffs and a fox scrambled out from under the boardwalk.

Cosmeston, Sully and Cadoxton rivermouth

Drake Gadwall at the reedbed edge behind the posts in the West Lake bay at Cosmeston this morning. 2 Stonechat in the Snipe field and another 2 alongside Sully Brook. A Peregrine over Cogan wood, and a Marsh Tit in the wood, pathside roughly half way through.

A Wheatear on the edge of BP playing fields in Sully this morning, where a large mixed flock of House Martins and (mostly) Swallows was feeding on disturbed insects as the pitches were being mown.

2 Snipe at the unlikely location of Cadoxton rivermouth this evening at high tide.

Oxwich Marsh

Popped into the marsh to fill my feeders.

There was a YB warbler calling close by, which I subsequently watched flitting around in a willow. I then went to check a wet area for snipe, and heard another calling from inaccessible scrub. Finally I went to the South Pond hide and had a YB warbler in with blue tits, a chiffchaff and a few goldcrest. The YB showed very well. All likely to be different birds as seen in very quick succession, not actively moving through, and in areas at least several hundred metres apart.

I then had to go to work. Given three birds in 30 minutes, I would imagine that there is a good chance of finding YBs anywhere around the village or in the scrub around the edge of the marsh this morning.

Penarth

3 p.m. this afternoon I was out in the garden, when alerted by a high pitched strident call, heard only Sunday on the GBC Portland trip. Ran inside to get my bins and was soon on to a Yellow-browed Warbler feeding with Chiffchaff in the trees that overhang the old railway line which is now a public path. Didn’t appear to stay long – I lost it in the canopy fairly quickly although the Chiffie was still around 30 mins later.

Dunraven & Marcross

A ringtail Hen Harrier flew in off the sea at Dunraven Bay and continued heading inland.

Marcross: a Yellow-browed Warbler was in osiers by the brook, south-west of the church, SS919690. This will be a different bird than that seen yesterday north-east of the village, about a kilometre away.
