Working in the woods in Rudry this afternoon a number of fresh wood pigeon kills ,probably Sparrow hawk.

Wood Pigeons and Redwings

Wood pigeon passage evident over River Taff this morning as I walked to the Cardiff Riding School for a winter thrush survey.  Compared to Steve Young’s count (see below) it was a modest passage of 5300 woodpigeons in 15 minutes. About 50 non migrating woodpigeons were on the winter thrushes survey along with 16 blackbirds, 1 mistle thrush and 8 redwing.

Lisvane & Llanishen

WeBS count this morning included on Lisvane: 1 green sandpiper, 2 mute swans (flew to Llanishen), 5 pochard, 11 tufties, 8 mallard, 5 cormorants, 1 heron, etc.

On Llanishen: 32 teal, 6 mallard, 2 coots, 2 little grebes, 13 Canadas, 42 common snipe, 8 linnets,  c35 meadow pipits and 4 skylarks. The big counts of snipe and teal reveals how much remains hidden when counting from the perimeter fence!

Penduline Tit. Newport NNR. 9.11.13

Well, I’m sure the other 100 photographers there in the week will have better HDR pictures, but, well, here’s proof I’m committed to the cause! Penduline Tit. Newport Wetlands NNR. 09:11:13 c.10am. Overcast. Picture By James Burton. Others: 18 Cettis. List uploaded to Bird Track.

Lisvane & Llanishen

Lisvane: a female goosander (unusual here) flew in at 14:20 and stayed for 15 minutes before departing south. 5 pochard, just 9 tufties, 10 mallard, 15 little grebes, 4 GC grebes, 1 kingfisher.

Llanishen: 1 common snipe, 2 little grebes, 17 mallard, 2 tufties, 1 coot, 1 teal, c20 linnets and c20 meadow pipits. Many hundreds of woodpigeons on the move.

Neath Salt Marsh & Crymlyn Burrows

Free-flying collection Geese are providing some diversity to the Canada Goose flock on the Neath Salt Marsh, currently. 107 Canada Geese also have 1 Abyssinian Blue-winged Goose (presumably the same bird that was here 13/2/12) and 1 Bar-headed Goose (down from 2 that were present a month or so ago) mixed in with them. It’s hard to get excited about them, but it does perhaps allow sub-groups within the big flock of Canada Geese to be tracked?

More traditional free-flying birds were made up by – Shelduck (3), Teal (11), Lapwing (6), Curlew (7), Redshank (1) and Starling (c250)

At Crymlyn Burrows around HT – Common Scoter (11), Great Crested Grebe (137 ((67 off CB) + (70 off AB))), Ringed Plover (179), Sanderling (207), Dunlin (221) and Curlew (31).

Cosmeston

An unexpected find behind the dragonfly pond a turtle dove. Managed to snap about 30 photos but this is the best one:Image

Also of interest the bearded tit still present in the reed beds by the board walk, the marsh tit was in Cogan wood again and a brief view of a kingfisher on the west lake.
