OOC RSPB Newport Wetlands

The fabulous male Penduline Tit showed near the visitor centre at Newport Wetlands, this afternoon. After waiting unsuccessfully for 5 + 1/2 hours  in poor conditions for the bird to show I decided to call it a day at 15:30. Luckily for me I hadn’t got that far when it decided to return to the centre and news got out quickly. I knew it would be, but now having seen it, I can state whole heartedly it was worth the wait and then some!

Flat Holm

Some good news about the island. Cardiff City Council have agreed that the island will remain open and continue to be operated by them until April 2015 when control will be handed over to two unnamed national organisations which have been chosen as preferred operators after expressions of interest were sought. Thought folk wd be interested as it is a non-birdy day 🙂

Pink Bay to Sker Point

Sker rocks almost completely submerged at high tide this morning. Nothing special to report, but had good close-up views of the gulls and waders that had been pushed up onto the shingle and near to the coastal path.

7 purple sandpipers, 3 bar-tailed godwits, 2 knot, 17 sanderlings, 8 ringed plovers, 15 curlews and only 7 golden plovers. Lots of turnstones and approx. 150 oystercatchers. Gulls numbered about 200, nearly all herring gulls, apart from 2 l-b-backs and singles of g-b-backed and black-headed.

Bearded Tit eventually showed this morning either side of 9 a.m. Quite vocal but very flighty. Looked as tho’ it was leaving at one point but wheeled round and came back. Last seen flying over to an inaccessible part of the reeds backing on to the dog field. Crap light but got a couple of record shots.

Kenfig Pool

There was an otter again yesterday and 16 stock doves over. A kingfisher showed well from the southern hide today.

For anyone who ticked the sawbill last week as red-breasted merganser, it is now widely accepted by most as being a juvenile goosander.

Cosmeston

Bearded Tit in the persistent rain at 10.25am, in reeds behind the info boards on the boardwalk. It looked like it intended to come out of the reeds but flew off with a ‘ping’ when some pushchairs approached. It was worth a soaking to see one for the first time!

Cardiff/Newport border footpath

This is what now greets walkers trying to get to the RGW from the coast road. It seems to have been placed there by the farmer, who doesn’t want walkers, especially with dogs on his land. I can go along with that to a degree, but this is a public footpath and part of the All Wales Coastal Path system. If any CCC employees are looking, please look into it, as to its removal.Image

North Cardiff

Roath Park Lake: Kingfisher at the wild end, excellent egg on toast at the cafe end.

Lisvane: no sign of yesterday’s green sandpiper today, best of the regulars was 17 little grebes and 2 pochard.

Llanishen: the south pool seems to be slowly filling, and is now bigger than at any time since the reservoir was drained, extending about half way to the middle pools. 2 teal, 1 little grebe, 1 coot, 10 mallard, and 2 mute swans, also a white-winged jackdaw in the big corvid roost and a stunning female peregrine stooped low over the south pool at dusk, heading towards the Llanishen tax office tower where it presumably roosted.

Cosmeston

No show from the male Bearded Tit this morning, but it was a tad windy – gusts blowing the reeds almost flat! A few Reed Bunting were coming out to the seed on the boardwalk, and a Blue Tit. Nice to meet up with Nicki S & Glyn Roberts. Might try again later.
