Wryneck (update)

The Wryneck showed a few times this afternoon from an area of dense scrub and saplings just up the slope from where Steve photographed it. Unfortunately the area is not easy to view and the bird is rather elusive. The location is roughly where the three Pants meet, grid ref SS 87851 75873.

(I tried to post this information in a comment replying to Steve’s earlier post, but it is “awaiting moderation”. Would it be better if comments from registered users were automatically published?)

Pant Norton +

Plenty of activity in the Pants this morning (stop sniggering at the back) including:

Redstart, Whinchat, Tree Pipit (17), Yellow Wagtail (2), Wheatear, Stonechat (8), Yellowhammer (12), Lesser Whitethroat (2), Common Whitethroat (30), Blackcap (12), Chiffchaff (8) and Willow Warbler (15).

Ogmore Estuary

4 common sandpiper, a little egret and 3 juv shellduck were the highlights among all the tents and anglers this morning.

Pant Norton had a common redstart, 2  spotted flycatcher, a yellowhammer a green woodpecker and lots of blackcaps, willow warblers, chiff chaff and whitethroats.

Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs

Highlight was this rather poorly marked garganey on Lisvane (thanks to Shane Faulkner and Mark Hipkin for the ID advice). Apologies for the dodgy photos -it was a long way off! Just about visible are: pale loral spot, pale chin/throat, dark cheek bar, dark lower mandible on longish dark grey bill.

Also at Lisvane: 10 sand martins (passage), 1 little egret, 1 grey heron, 2 little grebes, 8 GC grebes (including a pair still on eggs on the floating platform), 8 pochard, 11 mallard, 2 mute swans, 100+ tufties and lots of coots. On Llanishen: 1 mallard and 1 grey heron.

Kenfig Saltmarsh

Glenda and I took a walk to Kenfig saltmarsh today from Kenfig industrial estate, on our outward journey there was a Sparrow Hawk harassing a Buzzard, then we saw a Kingfisher on river Kenfig near the railway sidings,  near Morfa tip  a pair of Stonechats with juveniles, some warblers, which I assume were young Willow Warblers, they looked very yellow with a prominent eye stripe,  also flocks of Goldfinch and Linnets , across the bridge we bumped into Mark Hipkin who showed us the Wood Sandpiper on the salt marsh, we returned on the other side of the river (south), were we saw a Kestrel hunting, and we disturbed a Green Sandpiper on two occasions on the marsh pools, and found a Kingfisher again on the river.

Weobley

5 Yellow wags following a group of horses on the marsh were perhaps the highlight of a pleasant walk out on the causeway. Small waders were rather scarce with just 40 Dunlin and 48 Ringed Plover seen, other odds and sods included 3 Wheatears, 403 Curlew, 11 Whimbrel, 3 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Wigeon and a Peregrine. 8+ Gannets were feeding mid-estuary.

40 Teal and juvenile Marsh Harrier seen by Mike Piercey at Llanrhidian.
