elusive Yellowlegs
I had a tip off that the yellowlegs was absent from WWT yesterday so I paid a couple of visits to Penclawdd Pill (lunch time and evening) as Tringas often interchange between these two sites, which lie on opposite sides of the estuary. There were 44 Redshank at lunch time (including 4 juvs – prob not from the Burry) and over 100 in the evening, though I only saw ~50% of these well enough. Just thought worth mentioning that if you’re passing there it could be worthwhile stopping to check the flock out (go to the west end of Penclawdd car park, the birds normally gather on the bend of the pill there), it’s been a long time since a yellowlegs visited Glamorgan…
PS. It’s back at WWT today (info. Rob Hunt).
A few digiscoped record shots from the day of its discovery on the 7th:

Lots of Red-veined Darters along E pool shore, plus Black-tailed Skimmers, Emperors, must have been thousands of Common Blue Damselfly, plus Blue-tailed.

Bits & Pieces
Three Crossbills flew south-west at Llanilid this morning, and four Common Sandpipers were on the main (studio) pool.
Later a Little Egret was at Ogmore Estuary and a female Peregrine was seen carrying prey over my (Bridgend) garden.

Cardiff
2 Avocets were reported at Cardiff Heliport bay yesterday. Wood Sand and Ruff at Kenfig river mouth today.
Cosmeston and Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve
Great Crested Grebe carrying 2 young on its back at Cosmeston this morning. Successful breeding at Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve also, with another 2 Great Crested Grebe juveniles there.
Cosmeston
My first visit for quite some time. The Gt Crested Grebe pair seem to have given up the nest on W lake. Judging by the no. of swimming dogs, and plastic bottles in the water, and two life saving rings chucked in too, I guess there’s been too much disturbance. Chiffhchaff and Blackcap singing. A few Black-headed Gulls have reappeared, and two tatty drake Tufted Ducks were on E lake.
