OOC Penclaccwydd

Took the grandkids today for pond dipping etc. Low tide so not much from B Steel hide and some CCW guys were working out on the salt marsh. An ad Common Gull was a little surprising on the pool to the rear of the hide. o/w only 4 Blackwits and a Redshank there.

elusive Yellowlegs

I had a tip off that the yellowlegs was absent from WWT yesterday so I paid a couple of visits to Penclawdd Pill (lunch time and evening) as Tringas often interchange between these two sites, which lie on opposite sides of the estuary. There were 44 Redshank at lunch time (including 4 juvs – prob not from the Burry) and over 100 in the evening, though I only saw ~50% of these well enough. Just thought worth mentioning that if you’re passing there it could be worthwhile stopping to check the flock out (go to the west end of Penclawdd car park, the birds normally gather on the bend of the pill there), it’s been a long time since a yellowlegs visited Glamorgan…

PS. It’s back at WWT today (info. Rob Hunt).

A few digiscoped record shots from the day of its discovery on the 7th:

KNNR

Too hot for much birding! A Hobby flew over the pool at the start of our GBC outing today. A few juv Whitethroats seen, Willow Warbler & Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler, 3 Heron. Lots of Red-veined Darters along E pool shore, plus Black-tailed Skimmers, Emperors, must have been thousands of Common Blue Damselfly, plus Blue-tailed.

Cardiff Bay barrage

Thought a walk across the Barrage this a.m. might give a little bit of refreshing breeze. 170 Black-headed Gulls at the Penarth end. 1 juv GC Grebe halfway along. House Martins visiting nests in the environment building and Sand Martins at nest holes in the dock by the Dr Who Experience.

Cosmeston

My first visit for quite some time. The Gt Crested Grebe pair seem to have given up the nest on W lake. Judging by the no. of swimming dogs, and plastic bottles in the water, and two life saving rings chucked in too, I guess there’s been too much disturbance. Chiffhchaff and Blackcap singing. A few Black-headed Gulls have reappeared, and two tatty drake Tufted Ducks were on E lake.
