Admin notice

Hi all. Have had a lot of positive feedback thanks, and some constructive suggestions, so the overall appearance might change a few times today while I try out different templates to improve legibility, esp of the posting date, and poss inclusion of the time for each post, and also how many posts fit on each page. We are limited by the layout of each template tho’.

Dead slow-worm found near the coast-path boardwalk.

Earlier on the 26th with Rich Facey, 2 peregrines at the Millennium Stadium and subad. LBB gull white [D+C] on the Taff Embankment nearby. Like Dan, I was surprised to see a brimstone (Lisvane) but I see there is a late-summer increase in activity of brimstones as they build up fat reserves prior to hibernation http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species.php?species=rhamni

Kittiwakes on Mumbles Pier

A full count from the pier this morning revealed 325 adults, with 76 apparently occupied nests, mostly on the artificial ledges. 34 nests were with young (another 5 were obscured) with the total count of young being 48. These figures show the site is well on the way to being recolonised to its former level, so congratulations are well in order to all concerned.
The photos show the differences in nest size and chick size, clearly some birds got a much earlier start than others.

Cardiff Bay Barrage

Just a couple of Rock Pipits, one of which looked like a juv, House Martins still visiting artificial nests on the environment building, Sand Martins seem to have finished in the old dock walls. A few 6-Spot Burnet Moths along the new path and some Common Blues, nice to see near the city.
