Kenfig West
Late news from yesterday, July 26th (I’ve only just registered for the excellent new website!)
Kenfig Rivermarsh: 1 greenshank, 3 dunlin (2 summer-plumaged), 17 lapwings, 1 male gadwall among 24 mallards and 11 teal, 1 kingfisher, 4 grey herons, 2 little grebes, etc.
Foreshore: 21 sanderlings, 15 oystercatchers, 18 GBB gulls, c120 BH gulls, 1 gannet offshore.
Dead slow-worm found near the coast-path boardwalk.
Earlier on the 26th with Rich Facey, 2 peregrines at the Millennium Stadium and subad. LBB gull white [D+C] on the Taff Embankment nearby. Like Dan, I was surprised to see a brimstone (Lisvane) but I see there is a late-summer increase in activity of brimstones as they build up fat reserves prior to hibernation http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species.php?species=rhamni
Caerau
22 juv Swifts screaming in tight formation over Caerau at dusk last night [ 26th]
Llanilid.

Amelia Trust Bioblitz
GBC were invited to help with a survey of the Amelia Trust Farm, near Barry, as part of their Bioblitz. As expected it was quite quiet, however 31 species were logged, including Sparrowhawk with prey, Yellowhammer, GS Woodpecker and a family party of Blackcaps.
Fforest Fawr behind Castell Coch
Goshawk flew high over this morning. Leps: Silver-washed Fritillary; Ringlet; Peacock; Large, Small & Green-veined White; Meadow Brown; Speckled Wood. A Brimstone was a surprise. (Daniel & Gethin Jenkins-Jones).
Oxwich Marsh
Good numbers of fledged reed warblers in the reed bed this morning. More unusually, 2 Sandwich terns high over the marsh with a flock of black-headed gulls. Assumedly disturbed from the roost at Nicholaston Pill,
Kittiwakes on Mumbles Pier
A full count from the pier this morning revealed 325 adults, with 76 apparently occupied nests, mostly on the artificial ledges. 34 nests were with young (another 5 were obscured) with the total count of young being 48. These figures show the site is well on the way to being recolonised to its former level, so congratulations are well in order to all concerned.
The photos show the differences in nest size and chick size, clearly some birds got a much earlier start than others.
Bryngarw Parc
Walk this morning proved to be very quiet but a lot of activity around the café with Nuthatch,Coaltit,Chaffincnh and Great and Blue tIT
