Ham Wall RSPB – 14 June 2026

Sunday 14th June – 12 Club members headed for the Somerset Levels and were treated to some good birds and good weather, although it did get rather hot & humid as the day progressed. At the first viewpoint at Ham Wall RSPB we had fabulous flight views of Bittern, Great White Egret and Marsh Harrier. There were a few Black-headed Gull nests here, some with very young birds. Near the nearby Tor View hide some Bittern ‘booming’ was heard, and some ‘pinging’ by Bearded Tits but they didn’t show. We continued on to the Avalon Hide where more Marsh Harriers performed, including a very smart male. ’Beardy’s’ were heard here too, and Reed Bunting and Sedge Warbler sang from exposed perches. Hobbys were on the target list and we did see two, but they were flying very high. A number of Garden Warblers were heard but not seen. After picnics in the Avalon hide and a return walk to the car park for an ice cream, we headed west along the main path to the Shapwick Heath NNR area. The Great Reed Warbler that had been reported for a few days in his area, by Noah’s hide, didn’t make an appearance, although two of our group did hear it a couple of times. Two more Hobbys and a Jay were seen by some, on the walk back. All in all, a great day, when we saw or heard 52 species. Click here for the full list.
