Cardiff Bay

Lsr Scaup, 5 Shovelers (3 m including 1 coming out of eclipse, 2 f), and a Cetti’s showed very well close off the boardwalk, calling not singing. A Kingfisher was in Hamadryad ‘pond’ and 2 Cetti’s off the Taff Embankment, 1 singing. Yesterday there were 3 Common Gulls on the orange buoys on the barrage.

North Cardiff

Llanishen: Highlight was a female goldeneye -my first of the winter here and my first on Llanishen Reservoir post-drainage. More tufties on Llanishen (37) than on Lisvane Reservoir today (18). Also visible were 2 teal, 6 mallard, 2 little grebes, c30 redwings, and a flock of 24 linnets.

Lisvane: business as usual: 18 tufties, 4 pochard, 2 mutes, 36 Canadas, 8 mallards, 8 little grebes, 4 GC grebes, 53 coots etc. Steady passage of hundreds of wood pigeons heading west.

Roath Park Lake: 1 shoveller, 2 teal and impressive numbers of coots, e.g. 142 in a single loose flock at the north end,

Sully Beach

Quite a bit of activity on Sully Beach this morning with Lol Middleton.

Lots of pied wagtails and Rock pipits, a meadow pipit, a flock of 40 or so Greenfinch with the odd Linnet and goldfinch thrown in. A kestrel overhead.

On the beach a Grey Plover, reasonable pic at

and couple of shots of the Purple Sandpiper that Lol saw yesterday at
http://andyburnsphotography.zenfolio.com/waders/h25d528e4#h2da6a5b0

The Purp’ was in with the flock of ringed plovers again so it may hang round for another day or two. I’ve not seen one of these at Sully and it was Lol’s first on there for 20 years.

I did get another interesting shot at

which shows how difficult it can be looking at flocks of birds in the air. This is only half the flock and is primarily ringed plovers but with the grey plover, the purple sand and a slightly out of focus turnstone in the shot as well.

Mumbles Hill & Pier

S/pl Great Northern Diver still present off the pier.  Catching crabs this morning.

Peregrine very active over Mumbles Hill at the moment – lots of wood pigeon and starling moving, and some big flocks of jackdaw up there too.

23 oystercatcher roosting on the Middle Head, 17 Med gull at Bracelet Bay, 3 shag on the outer island.

CBWR

In Hamadryad ‘pond’, a Cetti’s and Water Rail both showed briefly but well at 10.30am and a pair of Kestrels over. In the reserve, a Lsr Scaup, 3 Shoveler (2m,1f), 1 Pochard, 1 Teal, and 2 Stonechat (m,f).
