Penclacwydd Sun 20Oct13

Sorry for late posting, only just got set up to post today. On a short visit to Penclacwydd yesterday, we enjoyed flight views of 2 Glossy Ibis a hundred yeards or so out from the Marsh hide. I think they were then visible moving in amongst the juncus viewable from British steel Hide.

Ogmore esturary

In blustery wet conditions this morning, of note, Watermill: 1 Grey Heron, 8 Teal, numerous Mallard; Portobello Island 1 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 3 Buzzard briefly over, 2 Redshank, at least 10 Common Gull in with the hundreds of Black-headed and Herring ulls, several Great black-backed Gull, several Pied Wagtail and a Meadow Pipit.

LLangynwyd

First Fieldfare’s of the year approx 180-200 flying around the fields at waun y gilfach llangynwyd and a small group feeding on hawthorn in field just before the church, up on top of llangynwyd 1 jack snipe on roadside at my ty talwyn, 1 red kite and a wheatear on the motorbike track

Rudry Common

BTO thrushes survey on and around the Common this morning.170 Redwing , most in woodland feeding on Yew/rowan and hawthorn berries,just one Fieldfare ,3 song thrush and 10 blackbird.

Other birds of note-3 bullfinch,2 grey wagtail and a flock of 50+ chaffinch feeding on beech mast .Small copper on the wing.

Cardiff Bay

In Hamadryad Park a vocal and mobile Cetti’s and a Water Rail calling on the north side of the ‘pond’; the pontoons on the Taff have disappeared.
CBWR: Lesser Scaup present with 72 Tufted Duck, Kingfisher, 2 Herons and 9 Little Grebes; 4 Water Rails calling including 2 close to both sides of the boardwalk.
Barrage: Kestrel and Wheatear f/o and Curlew in sea.

Baglan Bay

A quick mid-morning (09:45-10:30) sea watch before the rain came in. Viewed from Baglan Dunes – Common Scoter (20), Velvet Scoter (2), Great Crested Grebe (42), Turnstone (18), Guillemot (4), Auk sp (30-40), Sky Lark (2 ->e) and Swallow (4 ->e).

Also a decent flock of Starlings (300+) around Scarlet Avenue, mainly flying around but landing out of view in back gardens, etc. It’s perhaps worth keeping an eye on them though, this area has form!

Mumbles Pier etc

Great northern diver c. 300m off Mumbles Pier. Adult with some traces of summer plumage still visible.
3 red-breasted merganser across Swansea Bay past lighthouse.
Mumbles Hill. Some large mixed flocks of tits (including a lot of long-tailed) with 2-3 chiffchaff and a few goldcrests amongst them.
Almost all the Med gulls were at Limeslade this evening.

Cardiff Bay

late p.m. by Prospect place, 1 drake Goldeneye and 19 Tufties, 1 Little Grebe and 2 GCG. Also 16 more Tufties up towards the Yacht Club. The rough ground opp the Ice Rink is fast disappearing under concrete for the construction of “Cardiff Pointe” [as if Cardiff Bay needs more ‘apartments’]. No more breeding Ringed Plover, or migrant Wheatears here then. Oh, on what’s left of the grass & pools there were 6 Pied Wags and a Linnet.
