A Spotted Flycatcher this evening on a piece of land earmarked for a housing development near Whitchurch Hospital.

Broughton this morning 10May15
Visible migration over Broughton farm and Broughton Burrows / heading maniny WNW 0830-1015 in strong southerly breeze:- 3 Swift, 29 Sand Martin, 56 House Martin, 396 Swallow and 1 Siskin. Offshore there were 2 adult ans 1 immature Gannets and the lone Oystercatcher left on the beach looked very lonley!
Yesterday was a much nicer day with single Reed Warbler singing at Llangennith Burrows and Delvid. The most interesting record was a Common Sandpiper calling as it flew over us up on Broughton Burrows.
Hendre Lake
One pair of Canada Geese with 13 goslings.
Watermill Flood/Ewenny River
About 20 sandmartin at the river bank, 1 goosander, 2 sedge warbler, and a few whitethroat. The highlight was a male Beautiful demoiselle that was really beautiful.
Rhosilli
There was a good steady movement of swallows all moving S/SW first thing. At least 130+ whilst I was there. Stumbled upon 2 yellow wagtail which were too brief as they circled around a few times before heading off high to the north.
A couple of Lesser whitethroat at Llanrhidian and Reynoldston, and 1 cuckoo near Broad Pool
Rudry Village (9th May)
On behalf of Neville Davies: one turtle dove flew into an oak tree for a short while at Rudry Village yesterday (May 9th), then flew out across to the direction of Rudry Common.
Garnwen
1 churring nightjar this morning was a big surprise
Radyr Floodplain
Singing Lesser Whitethroat singing this morning.
Rudry Common
Yesterday evening, despite the Common being burnt to a cinder a cuckoo,a few displaying tree pipits,2 Garden warblers and a PWC tick for me in the form of a female Wheatear best of a short stroll.
Forest Fawr, Caerphilly
First Cuckoo of the year heard singing this afternoon.
Grangemoor Park and Leckwith/Ely Trails
Grangemoor Park- Lesser Whitethroat singing, well away from “chimney” site on other side of reserve. Reed Bunting- one singing; Reed Warbler-singing at two sites. Leckwith Road drainage ponds- Reed Warbler singing. Mute Swan on nest.
Porthcawl Seawatch
5:45 – 7:30 this morning. 1 Gannet, 2 Common Scoter, c30 Brent Geese, 1 Shelduck, 5 Whimbrel, 2 Oystercatcher, c50 Turnstone past. All but the Whimbrel were heading down channel. A little disappointing really, I was hoping for a little better after the winds of the last few days.
Barrage seawatch
An hour looking out across the Channel from the Barrage 18:15-19:15 produced 2 Gannet and 2 Arctic Skua down channel – result! Although mildly miffed to find that Arctic Skua only gets you 1 point on PWC while Gannet gets 2.
Cosmeston/Penarth
small arrival of Sand Martins this morning in the howling gale – about 30 over E lake. No sign of the Egyptian Goose. A Swift was over Penarth town centre this afternoon.
Tutt Head Seawatch
A seawatch from 05:45 to 06:45 this morning produced: Fulmar (44), gannet (5), Manx shearwater (4), guillemot (4), Sandwich tern (2), common scoter (1), whimbrel (2), turnstone (1), a swift and a grey seal. All birds with the exception of whimbrel, west into the wind
Lavernock
Just a short-ish session this morning [albeit late morning], only produced 1 Fulmar d/c.
Various
Bit late to post – been riveted to the snooker! Nice walk round Bryngarw CP this morning – Dipper & Grey Wag on the river, poss 3 pairs of Mistle Thrush, loads of Blackcap, Garden Warbler heard but not seen, then on to Parc Slip, and finally called in at Cardiff Bay where there were c.50 Swift and all three hirundines and small numbers.
Broughton 04May15
May the 4th be with you. Anyway, back to birding and the most productive area today was out of the wind in Delvid burrows between the two caravan parks. The small reedbed there seems to have attracted at least 4 singing Reed Warblers. I managed to see one, but I think like last year it is more likely these are passing through, but we’ll see. Also there, 2+ Sedge Warbler, a Cetti’s Warbler (a first for us in this locality) several Blackcap, Whitethoat and Chiffchaff. There were also a few Peacock butterflies as well as a female Orange Tip.
Oxwich Marsh
Grasshopper warbler and cuckoo this morning. Former seems to be holding territory.
A summary of the ringing year to date at the marsh is here: http://gowerbirdringinggroup.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/oxwich-marsh-4-may-2015-season-so-far.html
